Top Rap Releases (Feb. 26): Turk, Soulja Boy, and Young Thug
February ends on a quiet note in terms of rap releases. Last week was a bit better with mixtape releases from Turk, Soulja Boy and Gucci Mane’s latest signee, Young Thug (YT). (Catch up here on past rap releases.)
Turk, Blame It On The System
After his release from a 9-year stint in prison, Turk is back in the rap game. The former Hot Boys rapper enlisted quite a few guests for his first mixtape, which is hosted by DJ Holiday. MMG’s Gunplay, Lil Lody, Gudda Gudda and former collaborators Lil Wayne, B.G., Juvenile and Mannie Fresh are all featured on the project. To revel in what once was, be sure to check the mixtape’s finest track, “Zip It,” which plays host to a Hot Boys reunion. (Listen to Blame It On The System.)
Soulja Boy, Foreign
In an effort to find that place in the afterlife for ring-tone rappers (outside of oblivion), Soulja Boy has dropped yet another mixtape (listen to it: Foreign.) The new 24-track project should placate fans of the young rapper, but it’s too early to tell if another smash record is in it for the “Pretty Boy Swag” performer, or if that single could translate into future record sales. He will release his fourth studio album, Promise, later this year.
Young Thug, 1017 Thug
Young Thug is Gucci Mane’s latest Brick Squad roster signee, which already claims Waka Flocka Flame, Wooh Da Kid and others. Those familiar with the rapper’s work, including his 2011 series I Came From Nothing, won’t be disappointed with this latest project (give 1017 Thug a listen.) New ears should disregard the less-than-creative moniker. Young Thug is walking down a path paved by the likes of Lil Wayne and Future, but his music is still entertaining. Be sure to check out “2 Cups Stuffed” and “Condo Music.”
