‘Urban Cowboy’ Coming to TV
One of John Travolta’s most memorable films from his early career is the somewhat offbeat 1980 drama, Urban Cowboy. Now, more than 30 years after the picture opened in theaters (subsequently inspiring a country/western fashion craze), Fox has ordered a pilot for a modern TV adaptation.
The film, which also starred Debra Winger, centered on a passionate young working class couple in Houston, struggling to better their lives and make their often volatile relationship work. A big part of the movie’s appeal was the first-rate country music the characters danced to in honky-tonk bars.
Craig Brewer, best known for writing the 2005 crime drama Hustle & Flow, is on board to write the script for the TV series. He has experience remaking iconic 1980s films, having written and directed the 2011 big screen remake of Footloose.
Robert Evans, who produced the original Paramount feature, will serve as an executive producer of this joint venture between Paramount TV and 20th Century Fox Television.
Evans remarked on the project: “In the 35 years since I made the original Urban Cowboy, country music and the influence of Texas has gone stratospheric. The timing could not be better to continue this story in the television world. And what an ace team of collaborators we have on board to make it happen.”
