“Life has knocked me down a few times. It showed me things I never wanted to see. I experienced sadness and failures. But one thing for sure, I always get up.” – Lloyd
After a semi-final defeat to Canada at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, Carli Lloyd was pictured running sprints, alone, on the pitch to make sure she was fully fit for the upcoming bronze medal game.

Lloyd has become synonymous with putting in extra work. Her 2016 memoir “When Nobody Was Watching” details her hard-fought journey to the top of Women’s soccer.
Former teammate Tiffany McCarty recently recounted watching Carli stay after training to complete more fitness drills. “I just remember watching her after practice doing fitness for like 20 minutes, and I just remember watching her like, ‘Wow, she has national team camp in two days. and she’s running fitness after our training where we had fitness already!’
Lloyd has admitted that dedicating herself to maintaining a high level of fitness has prolonged her career. Changing her mindset from just sticking to bodyweight exercises and soccer-specific running to incorporating more explosive and ballistic movements helped her feel stronger and more explosive on the pitch into her late 30’s.
