Watch Brian Shaw and ‘The Mountain’ Walk With 1,565 Pounds on Their Back
Every March, the Arnold Sports Festival brings bodybuilders, powerlifters, bikini competitors, supplement-hungry meatheads and curious onlookers to Columbus, Ohio, for a three-day event hosted by Arnold Schwarzenegger and featuring dozens of competitions and an exhibit hall where companies in the fitness industry can show off their latest products.
The Arnold (as it’s commonly known) also features the Arnold Strongman Classic, where the biggest and strongest men in the world lift ridiculous amounts of weight to determine who is the strongest of them all.
As a collective group, these men are behemoths. Hafþór Júlíus Björnsson, who plays “The Mountain” on HBO’s Game of Thrones, is the largest in the group at 6-foot-9 and over 440 pounds. Current World’s Strongest Man Brian Shaw is a close second at 6-foot-8 and 420 pounds.
Last year, STACK had the opportunity to see the Deadlift competition in which British Strongman competitor Eddie Hall broke a world record. He has since become the first person to deadlift half a ton.
This year, we saw two heavy carry events. The first was called the Super Yoke, where the competitors had to walk 13 feet in 30 seconds while carrying a whopping 1,565 pounds on their backs. Even for these ridiculously strong guys, every single step was a challenge.
The next event was the 1,102-pound timber carry. The competitors had to deadlift a frame made out of wooden timbers and then walk up a 35-foot ramp.
Shaw dominated both of these events and “The Mountain” finished fourth. After two days of competition that also featured a Deadlift, heavy bag throws and the Austrian Oak Press, Shaw took home first place and Björnsson came in second.
