Athletes want to finish their careers on a high note. One of the worst things that can happen to an athlete is to be injured at the end of his or her senior year. That’s exactly what happened to University of Texas at El Paso softball player Kawehiokalani Netane, but she didn’t let it stop her.

The senior tore her ACL back in April. That would be a season-ending injury for most players, but not for Netane. In UTEP’s final game of the season against Southern Mississippi, head coach Tobin Echo-Hawk put Netane in as a pinch hitter for one last at-bat.
Then Netane did the unexpected—she got a hit, right over the pitcher’s glove, up the middle. And she hit the ball hard enough to give her time to hobble to first base.
Netane is one tough player even to walk, let alone leg out a single in a softball game.
