Last night, Golden State Warriors guard Klay Thompson scored 19 straight points in the third quarter of Game 4 of the Western Conference Finals. But the Warriors lost to the Oklahoma City Thunder 118-94, allowing the Thunder to take a commanding 3-1 series lead.

Thompson’s run helped the Warriors cut the deficit to eight at the end of the third quarter. He couldn’t miss in that quarter, but he wasn’t even close when he said later that the Warriors had 40 assists against the Thunder. During a post-game news conference, Thompson looked at the stat sheet and thought the Warriors had 40 assists.

Scratch that. They actually had 15.

The Warriors did have 40 rebounds, however. Rebounds and assists are next to each other on the stat sheet, so Thompson probably just mixed them up.

With only 15 assists, the Warriors abandoned their quick ball movement leading to open shots, a style of play that produced much success during the regular season. To dig out of their 3-1 hole, they will need more ball movement—and more assists setting up open shots and easy baskets.
