The sequel to X-Men: First Class suffered a setback earlier this month with the departure of director Matthew Vaughn. But according to Deadline, X-Men and X2 director Bryan Singer (pictured above) has stepped in to guide the project. (Haven’t seen it yet? Check out the X-Men: First Class trailer.)
Vaughn, who wore the director’s hat for First Class in 2011, has not completely backed away from the project, however; he is currently negotiating with 20th Century Fox to serve as the film’s producer, alongside writers Simon Kinberg and Lauren Shuler Donner.
The film studio has a script for the sequel, tentatively titled X-Men: Days of Future Past; and most of the cast members from First Class are expected to return, including Michael Fassbender, James McAvoy and Jennifer Lawrence. The studio hopes to release the superhero flick on July 18, 2014—assuming no more setbacks.
It’s currently unclear where Days of Future Past would place the mutants plot-wise; however the sequel is expected to have a darker theme than its predecessor. First Class explored the roots of several X-Men characters, including fan favorites Erik “Magneto” Lensherr and Charles “Professor X” Xavier. It was a major financial success—earning more than $300 million at the box office worldwide.

Fans won’t have to wait until 2014 to see a film involving Bryan Singer. The director is currently working on Jack the Giant Slayer, a fairy-tale fantasy/adventure that will be released by Warner Bros. Pictures on March 1, 2013.
