‘X-Men’ TV Series in Development at Fox
An X-Men TV series is currently in the works at Fox. Talks are underway to adapt the popular comic books into a live-action show for the network. If it gets green-lighted, the project will have a solid team behind it. Star Trek 3 writers Patrick McKay and J.D. Payne will write the script, sharing credit with producers Evan Katz and Manny Coto of TV’s 24.
Although Fox has confirmed only that the prospective series is in “very early stages of development,” there are plenty of reasons to believe it will materialize—including an encouraging quote from X-Men: Days of Future Past writer/producer Simon Kinberg on Collider last year: “We’re still in this place of figuring out what the future of the franchise will be, but when you look at S.H.I.E.L.D. to some extent and what Marvel is doing now with Daredevil, it makes sense to tell some of these stories in TV, partly because there’re just not enough screens to do all these characters, and also because the serialized format of comic books is better suited for TV.”
Rumors about the project have teased viewers for awhile. But given the significant and continuing box office success of the film series, it makes sense to bring it to television. With the recent explosion of comic book series adaptations on network and streaming services, many fans are probably wondering why the show isn’t already on the air. They should remember, however, that although 20th Century Fox owns the rights to the film franchise, Marvel must consent to the deal before the characters can be brought to the small screen.
